Fishbook Official Opening Books released

Announcing the official release of Fishbook opening books today, October 18, 2018.

This is the fruit of 3 months endeavor to have a chess engine opening book that will be suitable to engage BrainFish/Cerebellum pair in a fair play of engine vs. engine match in a rating list production environment. The positive results against Cerebellum and Fauzi 2.2 made the official release early.

BOOK NAME DEPTH POSITIONS REMARKS
Fishbook Neutral 161018 10 334,258 Engine vs. Engine
Fishbook Active 161018 15 1,190,285 Engine vs. Engine
Fishbook Dynamic 161018 30 8,308,656 Book vs. Book

Fishbook Neutral is suited for engine vs. engine match with up to 10 moves depth. Both white and black had 50% chance of winning. The positions had been filtered to include only draws from the PGN collection with 30cp threshold. The opening book consists mainly of the popular primary 4 first moves such as e4, d4, c4 and Nf3 avoiding the less familiar openings that has the least chance of success. Fishbook Neutral depth should be set 5 or lower for fair play. Greater depth will favor the weaker engine as the position is equal and will lead to a higher probability of draw.

Fishbook Active is also a neutral book similar to Fishbook Neutral but it is deeper with 15 moves depth. White has at most 51% better chance of winning. This will be useful when a user is bored with the drawish end positions of Fishbook Neutral. In addition to the 4 popular opening moves, 4 more were added such as g3, b3, Nc3 and f4 to have more choices but these are set to zero priority as default. The user has greater option to control the choice of opening moves by changing the settings in the Arena book settings menu such as priority, number of games, winning percentage and others. Fishbook Active could defeat other neutral opening books such as Perfect 2016 by Sedat Canbaz.

Fishbook Dynamic is definitely a BrainFish/Cerebellum neutralizer by design. Its modest goal is just to level the game to 50%-50% making BrainFish behave like Stockfish, but the results were more than that was hoped for. The book is limited to 30 moves depth which is much lesser compared to  Cerebellum with 36 moves depth and Fauzi which has more than 100 moves depth! The Fishbook Dynamic is primarily suited for rating list tournaments against BrainFish/Cerebellum but could be used in book vs. book matches. Aside from Cerebellum and Fauzi 2.2, it also defeated HS-Grandbook by Harry Schnapp, Dan Corbitt's Superbook, Quisinsky Special and Tomcat by Adit Tangsel in earlier tests.

Here is the fresh result of the game between the latest versions of Fishbook Dynamic and Cerebellum r52:

Brain Fish 161009 Cerebellum r50 vs. Fishbook 161016 vs. Fauzi 2.2

A rare tournament among the top chess engine books.

Brain Fish/Cerebellum by Thomas Zipproth is the current favorite and most actively maintained.

Fauzi 2.2 by Fauzi Akram Dabat was the strongest some time ago. It's newer and bigger sibling version 4.5 is presumed to be the strongest but is commercial and not publicly available.

Fishbook 161016 is a newcomer which started development starting August, 2016 to have an opening book that will be used for fair play when Brain Fish is the opponent in the rating list production.

The engines used for Fishbook and Fauzi is Shark 161010.

The result: Brain Fish smashed Fauzi 2.2 but was unable to crack Fishbook which even have a -5 score. Only Fishbook defeated both Brain Fish and Fauzi but Brain Fish was the champion by virtue of its devastating performance over Fauzi.

There will be a race of chasing tails between Cerebellum and Fishbook in the days ahead as each one tries to learn from each other and then use it to outdo the other.

Fishbook 161011 vs. Fauzi 2.2 - Opening Book Match

Another opening book vs. book match. This is a sequence of the previous match where the older version Fauzi 1.4 was pitted against the development version Fishbook 161002 more than a week earlier in which Fauzi 1.4 lost. Fishbook 161002 was no match against the later version Fauzi 2.2 which showed a score of 67%-33% in the latter's favor. After many days of sparring against a static punching bag, the newer Fishbook 161011 finally neutralized the awesome power of Fauzi 2.2. This is the score:

This may not be earthshaking, but it is major milestone in the development of Fishbook. The motivation to continue its development is to tackle the even more powerful and huge Fauzi 4.5 if that would materialize since it is a commercial book which is not available publicly.

Perhaps, somebody out there could test this development version and the following versions to test its strength. It would be better if someone could send the Fauzi 4.5 book so that I could speed up the Fishbook development and release the results quickly.

Fauzi 1.4 vs. Fishbook Dynamic 161002

This is a book vs. book competition between the opening book named Fauzi 1.4 and Fishbook Dynamic 161002. Fauzi is the strongest opening book before Brain Fish came out, while Fishbook is a superset of the book that neutralized Brain Fish/Cerebellum.

The chess engines used was Goby 160930, a CFish/Stockfish clone which is the same for both sides with one using Fauzi/Goby modern2 and the other Fishbook/Goby modern.

Here is the result:

A win by Fishbook but it is against the older version of Fauzi. The latest Fauzi version is 4.5 with a huge file size of 1.5GB. Fishbook may not stand a chance but it is just beta and is being improved everyday. Someday an equivalent version of Fishbook maybe able to tackle the latest Fauzi if it is made available for testing.
