Fried Shark 141121 vs. Orka 141121 - Test Matches

A user has requested for Fried Shark vs. Orka test, so here it goes. The 2 matches were organized differently with one having 1 minute + 1 second in 600 rounds while the other is a shorter 20 seconds + 200 milliseconds in 1000 rounds.

The total score is 802-798 in favor of Fried Shark. My advise is to use Fried Shark when there is no Syzygy tablebase enabled, otherwise, Orka.

Note that these are useless Stockfish clones,  so don't expect too much but stick with the originals.

Amazing 100 Chess Games of the Century! - Orka 141121 vs. SF 211114x MZ

Today, I just witnessed the most amazing chess games in my life. It was the battle between the 2 strongest Stockfish clones namely Orka 141121 and SF 211114x MZ in a super blitz of 10 seconds + 100 milleseconds time control. Orka swallowed SF MZ whole by checkmate in all the 100 games.

I am sure it is not yet April 1st. Is the SF MZ author joking, or don't know what I am doing?

Also, a new SF clone was created based from this version named Orka 141119.

Fried Shark 141117 vs. Stockfish and Clones - 100 Rounds, 1M+1S

There were some releases of the Stockfish clones engine which were based on the recent originals, so it is time once again to get to know their relative strengths. Of course, I want to know whether Fried Shark is still sharp but the results showed that the gap is getting closer and probably one day another Stockfish clone will be raising the flag. Just be reminded that these are random numbers, so anything is possible.

Here are the results of the individual matches.

The last encounter with Sugar 2.0f and Fried Shark 141107 was a lopsided win by Shark which maybe attributed to bad compile of Sugar 2.0f. This time, Sugar 2.0g version does better but still lost to Fried Shark 14110921 in the SF Clones One On One Rematch.

Stockfish 14110921 x64 vs. SF Clones - 100R 1M1S - 2014-11-11

There are some SF clones releases lately like Heron Impossible and DON, so I made a tournament to assess the effects with their playing strength. The latest Stockfish 14110921 release was used as the anchor to compare the strengths, while Fried Shark is a guest player. Tournament conditions remain the same as with the previous tournaments.

The results showed that Fried Shark 14110921 won against all opponents with Stockfish 14110921 in second place, while Heron Impossible 311014 and DON 101114 filling the next places.

Be warned that this is just an impromptu test and should not be taken seriously. It is advised that testers do independent testing to have a feel of the Stockfish and Clones strength. If testers get different results, so be it, that's what random statistics are.

Sugar 2.0f x64 vs. Fried Shark 141107 x64 - SF Clones War - 100R 1M1S

This is a match of 2 SF clones between the latest Sugar 2.0f x64 released on November 6, 2014 and the latest Fried Shark 141107.

Sugar is currently number 2 in the Owl Rating List but the results showed a devastation of 80.5-19.5 by Shark without winning a single game. Obviously Sugar's score is not the kind of score by a decent SF clone. Something is wrong with the tweaks by the author. There is no quality control before release and needs to be checked.

SF 061114 MZ x64 vs. Fried Shark 141106 x64 - SF Clones War 100R 1M1S

SF 061114 MZ and Fried Shark 141106 are SF clones from the release of Stockfish dated November 11, 2014.

While still fresh, a match is arranged to assess the strength of these SF clones. It is a 100 round, 1 minute base + 1 second increment time control and both using generic x64 bit compiles. I hope nobody will do a match where SF MZ version is SSE4.2 or POPCNT and report that Fried Shark loses.

The winner is Fried Shark with a score of 54-46 as shown below.

The Big 3 Grandmonsters + Fried Shark Rumble - 100 Rounds 1M+1S

This is another post to have an overview on the current relative strength of the Big 3 Grandmonsters namely: Stockfish, Komodo and Houdini with guest Fried Shark added. The latest version of Stockfish 14110619 was dated November 6, 2014 which is the reference point of the competition.

The previous posts were 2 gauntlet matches of 100 rounds each, this time it is a round robin of 100 games which is split into 2 parts at 50 games each so that it will be finished in time for posting.  The computers used were 2 AMD Quad Core computers with almost identical configuration. These were the same ones used in the previous tournaments. Time control is the same 1 minute base + 1 second increment.

The result showed identical position of rankings in both tournaments with the following order: Fried Shark 141106, Houdini 4, Stockfish 14110619 and Komodo 8. It is a surprise that the latest Stockfish 14110619 is in the 3rd place though it does not mean that there is regression. Houdini comes strong in second place while Komodo is at the tail this time. The possible cause of the scrambled ranking is maybe due to the random effects of global warming.

Here is the combined result of the tournament with raw ELO rating:

   # PLAYER                                :  RATING    POINTS  PLAYED    (%)
   1 Fried Shark 141106 x64    :   29.13       166.5       300        55.5%

   4 Komodo 8 x64                     :  -36.21       129.5       300        43.2%

Fried Shark 141103 x64 vs. The Big Three Grandmonsters - Rematch Gauntlet 100R 1M1S

This is a continuation of the previous match where it was unusual for Stockfish to be behind Komodo and Houdini. The purpose is simply to add more statistical data for reference.

The match was conducted in another AMD 4 core computer with 8 GB RAM but with same tournament conditions as with the previous post.

Fried Shark once again defeated all the Big Three Grandmonsters and this time Stockfish was above Komodo and Houdini with slim margins. The ranks reflected their position in the Owl Rating List.

Fried Shark 141103 x64 vs. The Big Three Grandmonsters - Gauntlet 100R 1M1S

In response to a request of not having a modern compilation in the tests, I decided to have a rematch against Komodo 8 and Houdini 4 but this time it also includes the latest build of Stockfish 14110319 where Fried Fish 141103 was based.

The result showed that Fried Shark defeated all the Big Three Grandmonsters with the unusual situation where Stockfish is at the bottom. Maybe the dark side of the moon was facing the earth at the time of the tournament. Perhaps, it is appropriate to have another run to verify the results.

Fried Shark 141102 x64 vs. Komodo 8, Houdini 4 - 100R 1M1S

Here is another exploratory test between Fried Shark against Komodo 8 and Houdini 4 in a 100 round robin at 1 minute base + 1 second time control. It is again conducted in a single AMD 4 core computer with 4GB RAM which should minimize statistical errors.

The winner is Fried Shark with a 22 points lead over the next placer Houdini. The tail ender is Komodo 8 which probably does not like the tournament environment.

Stockfish Clones War - 11/02/2014

After the exploratory tests in the previous post with Fried Shark 141102 against Stockfish 14110208 and SF 271014 MZ, it is time to test it against other prominent SF clones such as Sugar, Heron and DON. This is just to verify if the previous results are consistent for credibility. The tournament was a 100 round robin with 1 minute base + 1 second increment time control. All the matches were conducted in a single computer with AMD 4 core CPU, 4 MB RAM running on Linux with Arena on WINE. This should minimize the statistical deviation as compared to running it on different set of computers with different components and software. The engine versions were the latest and the best compiles to make the battle fair.

The result showed that Fried Shark topped the 100 round robin tournament with 3.5 points lead over runner up Sugar 2.0e. Fried Shark beat all opponents, Sugar was so overwhelming against DON while Heron and DON occupied the last 2 places.
